Working towards a livable and humane world

Stroomversnellers is an organization with a clear vision of a world in which the Earth remains livable, exploitation is a thing of the past, and solidarity is the norm. Stroomversnellers embodies this worldview through the way it works and the partners it collaborates with. Every training, consultation, and event contributes to a livable and humane world in the broadest sense. Through these activities, Stroomversnellers helps to build a healthy ecosystem within the social movement.

The work of Stroomversnellers focuses on both small grassroots organizations and movements as well as large established institutions. From housing collectives to major NGOs, from climate movements to initiatives countering online hate and exclusion, Stroomversnellers helps them grow. The strength of Stroomversnellers lies in its ability to provide large institutional organizations with the tools to anchor themselves in social dynamics that enable sustainable and deeply rooted change. At the same time, its offerings for smaller grassroots movements focus on achieving tangible successes and strengthening their foundations over the long term.

Because of its diverse network, Stroomversnellers acts as a connector: building bridges, fostering connections, and contributing to the collective power of the broader social counter-movement. Thanks to this wide network and adaptive approach, Stroomversnellers can respond quickly and effectively to emerging challenges.

Organization

Stroomversnellers is a non-hierarchical organization composed of professionals from various social movements. This structure contributes to its effectiveness and agility. The professionals Stroomversnellers collaborates with ensure that the collective expertise within the group is fully utilized during trainings. For this reason, Stroomversnellers works with the Direct Education Method. To make sure that the expertise of both the group and individual participants comes to the forefront, special attention is given to both mainstream and marginal perspectives, whether within society or within the group itself.

The professional trainers of Stroomversnellers come directly from the movement. This means they understand better than anyone the lived experience, language, and challenges of social movements. They are therefore able to center the group’s learning needs and respond to issues that arise during a training, even when these go broader or deeper than the initial focus. Ongoing professional development ensures that trainers can adapt quickly and work effectively in different contexts.

Activities

The activities of Stroomversnellers include external facilitation, trainings, action skills, and strategic development processes. Standard activities generally take half a day and are facilitated by two professional trainers. Thanks to the Stroomversnellers Education Fund, professional trainings are also made accessible to grassroots organizations while ensuring fair pay for trainers. In addition, Stroomversnellers maintains a freely accessible toolbox with information and practical tools for organizing successful actions.

Trainer

Joanna has been active for many years in the anti-racism movement, where she contributes in various ways. She regularly takes to the streets and helps organize protests for different social issues. She is often asked to manage the safety of large protests.

Joanna started giving training sessions because she believes it’s important to strengthen movements and groups by sharing knowledge and experience. “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel!” Joanna frequently trains groups on resilience against online hate, using her experiences from the anti-racism movement to ensure that new generations of activists are not silenced by hatemongers.

To relax from her activist lifestyle, Joanna enjoys watching true-crime documentaries while knitting or embroidering.

He has also lived for many years in housing collectives with an inspiring mix of idealists, refugees, and formerly homeless people. Edwin

Trainer

Edwin (he/him) has been active in the climate movement in the Netherlands for about 10 years. He has gained extensive experience organizing grassroots campaigns and actions with groups like Fossielvrij NL and Code Rood.

“In recent years, I’ve participated in various organizing and campaign training programs with organizations like 350.org, NEON, and Ulex, which have helped me grow as a trainer. I love showing how systemic change works in practice through workshops or training, and giving activists the right tools to effectively tackle abuse of power. That’s how we work towards a fairer world, because as Naomi Klein says: ‘To change everything, we need everyone.’ You don’t learn these skills in school, which is why training organizations like Stroomversnellers are so important.”

Katrien

Trainer

Katrien (she/her) is an all-round trainer for Stroomversnellers and has had a passion for social movements from a young age. Her commitment to a more sustainable and just world began in the environmental movement and during her support for undocumented refugees. “As a young environmental activist in Belgium, I was fortunate to receive a lot of training from experienced people, because you don’t learn how to take action in school!”

Katrien started as a trainer in the 2000s with the Belgian organization Vredesactie, where she prepared hundreds of people for mass civil disobedience actions against nuclear weapons. In the Netherlands, she worked as a union organizer, supported migrant workers, and helped establish urban agriculture projects.

Margriet

Mediator

Margriet (she/her) is an MfN-registered mediator with a heart for social and ecological justice. Within Stroomversnellers, she is available as a mediator. As the middle child in a large family, she naturally grew up “in between” people; the connector, the one who sees both sides of the story. After studying Clinical Psychology, she became deeply involved in intentional community living in a multicultural setting, as well as in the world of activism.

“Sharing strong, common ideals is no guarantee for easy collaboration. Sometimes people completely lose sight of each other. I’m committed to helping restore that connection. People who have the courage to engage in dialogue with vulnerability, in the hope of improving their mutual understanding and finding a solution, truly inspire me.”

Margriet is happy to support as an independent and impartial facilitator, creating clarity and space in a confidential and safe environment. This allows you to explore a new direction together, a next step that everyone can move forward with.
